3rd Quarter - Week 19 - Internet - Search Strategies

Word for the Week - Search Strategies

(using a Google search for St. Philip Neri School as an example)

If I type St. Philip in the white search box I get back 25,800,000 web pages results. The first 50 results (going to the 5th  page of listings do not include our school so I give up on this search

If I type St. Philip Neri in the white search box I get back 255,000 webpage results. The first 50 results (going to the 5th page of listings do not include our school, so I again abandon this strategy.

If I type St. Philip Neri School in the white search box I get back 164,000
webpage results. The first one is our school.

If I type St.+Philip+Neri+School I get 73,100
results--including our school homepage as the 1st result

If I type 'St. Philip Neri School” I get 11,300 results
--including our school homepage, again as the 1st result.

Even thought different search engines may have particular differences, in order to
effectively search the Internet you need to use a few tricks:

* Use key words which do not include “a, and , the, etc.”

* Enclose phrases in punctuation marks .

* Use the plus sign (+) when you are looking for a combination of words. Most search engines do not seek words in the order that you type them when using the plus sign so the results may not appear in the order that you typed them. Use quotation marks for a particular word order such as a phrase.

* Use the minus sign (-) to exclude a particular word or words

* Search engines are not case sensitive--you don’t have to use proper capitalization

* Some search engines allow the option of choosing “and” or “phrase”--just click the little circle to set this option.
